July is IVDD Awareness Month

July is IVDD awareness month. If you don’t know what IVDD is it is Intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) in dogs can also be described as a ruptured, slipped, bulging or herniated disk.

There are several dogs that are prone to IVDD: dachshund, corgi, beagle, frenchie, shih tzu, labrador retriever, poodle, doberman, pekingese, german shepard, lhasa apso, bichon frise, jack russell, and dalmatian

I have a dachshund that suffers from IVDD and has had several flare ups, along with surgery. So this personally affects my life. This is Max.

Max came into our life a few years ago from the Humane Society. He was skin and bones and had an infection. We had no medical history and he has given us quite an education. The one thing we learned fast is that he suffers from IVDD.

In our short time with him we have tried several of the ways to treat IVDD dogs, kennel rest with meds (6-8 weeks), surgery (5k-10K with 4-6 weeks kennel rest), physical therapy, CBD and acupuncture.

Max last week at his acupuncture appointment.

I spared you the pictures from the surgery, but you can view a few on my Instagram Highlights at @Doxiegreetings.

So being that this is a personal blog about my art and dogs, I wanted to share this because so many people don’t know what they are getting into when they get a dog, or much less a dachshund.

At this time I am creating artwork for IVDD, coming soon!

Keep following for more little tidbits about dogs, art and ADHD. - Judy
